About Carlisle
In history it is said that whoever held Carlislecould have influence over the destinies of both English and Scots destinys. The Carlisle border has seen many armies,tribes and rebels have came and gone, each of them leaving stories behind for today's visitors to experience. History has it that in the Dark Ages that followed, King Arthur and his magician Merlin visited Carlisle. The magnificent Carlisle Castle was founded in 1092 by William the Conquerer's son. Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the famous castle and it is still home to the King's Own Royal Border Regiment today. If You visit Carlisle you may explore its great dungeons , and see the prisoners' carvings, as well as seeking out how Bonnie Prince Charlie captured the great Castle in 1745. Near by is the Citadel, built by Henry VIII with its unique "twin drum" bastions. Carlisle's Cathedral, with its famous century stained glass window, is also a must see as is the award winning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, with its innovative Millennium Gallery.
